Could you imagine driving down the highway at 70mph and your toddler – laughing hysterically – opens their rear-passenger door, spilling toys and papers onto the freeway? Thank goodness for modern-day child door locks!
Now Ford is making child-safety even easier for parents! Today, with the Ford Mykey system they target 3 very important safety issues: Speed, Seat Belts, and Stereo Volume.
Limit Speed with Ford Mykey
Ford Mykey can limit the top speed of your teen’s car to 80mph. Some might feel this isn’t limiting enough, but Ford had two reasons for that number. First, some highway speedlimits in the country exceed 70mph, even 75mph. And secondly they wanted to give leeway for extenuating circumstances.
St Louis Ford dealer Reuther Ford is showing parents they can set a chime to warn a driver exceeding a speed of their own choosing (for example, 45, 55, or 65mph).
Ford Mykey Seat Belt Safety
If you want to be sure your driver and their passengers are wearing their seat belts, the Mykey system will sound a six-second chime every minute if seat belts are not fastened. This provides peace of mind for both you and the parents of your teen’s passengers.
Mykey Volume Controls
Protect the delicate membranes of your vehicle’s speakers… just kidding – I mean your teen driver’s ears! Parents have the option of what volume would be considered dangerous.
Ford’s research shows that parents would be more likely to let teens use their vehicles with the Ford Mykey system, and if it gets them the car more often, the number of teens objecting drops considerably.
If you would like to see the Ford Mykey system in the St Louis Ford dealer or Jefferson County Ford dealer area, head by Reuther Ford to see it debut in the 2010 Ford Focus late this summer!

Engineers matched a turbocharged engine with a heavy-duty racing clutch, a five-speed gearbox with a short-throw shifter and a motorsport-inspired limited slip differential. The suspension is almost all Transit Connect, but there have been modifications to give the van sportier street performance.
